AJ Allmendinger wins NASCAR Cup Series race

AJ Allmendinger was the defending winner at Brickyard 400 in NASCAR Cup Series. He won last year's race and hopes to defend it this Sunday in the Verizon200. Kaulig Racing employs the 22-yearold driver as a part time driver. The company hopes to make it full-time next season.

Allmendinger won the qualifiers. He won the PIR, his first Cup Series race since he won the Champ Car World Series race there back in 2006. Allmendinger, however, dropped to the rear of the field after qualifying. He spun his car after the green signal was given and had to pit early.

Ross Chastain avoids the carnage during the first turn in the Daytona car race. Chastain avoided carnage after missing Turn 1's Access Road. He was able, side-byside with the leader, to take over the leading role. Reddick then regained control of the lead by going through Turns 5-6. Chastain explained that the move was not preplanned but that it was an natural reaction to Reddick's restart.

Chastain was penalized 30 seconds for cutting the track during the final restart of the car race. Many NASCAR fans accused Chastain of trying to spoil the race by taking shortcuts. Chastain seemed to be in this race for the win. However, he was penalized for going into the outside track to avoid the wreckage. Chastain was second in the race and was able fight for the lead.
