If you are a NASCAR fan, you may be familiar with the 1950 Grand National Series. Joe Merola, Curtis Turner and Tim Flock are all names you'll recognize. You might remember Darlington Raceway, as well. But what was it like to be a fan back then?

Tim Flock

Tim Flock is a NASCAR Sprint Cup series champion. He was a legend in the sport but he also had many encounters with NASCAR during the years since the organization of the sanctioning body. However, it wasn't all about racing.

Flock was born in Fort Payne (Alabama) at the tender age of thirteen. His father was a professional bicycle racer and owned his first vehicle. He competed alongside his siblings and his younger sister Reo. Reo was an excellent skeet shooter. Ethel his older sister was a equally skilled stock car driver.

Curtis Turner

Curtis Turner is one the most accomplished and colorful drivers in NASCAR's 1950 history. He was the first person to win two NASCAR races in a row while leading every lap. His racing career began at the southern states. He worked in the logging industry as well as moonshining. He later turned his attention to business and became a member the Atlanta Speedway board. Turner's career spanned over four decades and predated the advent of superspeedways. He won the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in 1956. He also won Rockingham Speedway's first American 500. He won 38 of the 79 races in which he participated. He was also the driver who won the race from the pole. Turner also competed in Charlotte's first "Strictlystock" event. He remains the only driver to win two consecutive NASCAR premier series races while leading every lap. He raced for many other legendary NASCAR drivers.

Joe Merola

Although Joe Merola is a misleading name, it is very accurate. Merola was a popular driver in NASCAR 1950. Joe Nagel, Jr., a Pittsburgh-based dealer sponsored Merola's car. Merola was only able to make one Grand National race, but his right rear wheel broke on lap one. Preston was well aware that this problem existed, but he couldn't fix it before the race.

Merola, in addition to driving Tucker in NASCAR races. The car produced so much torque, that the axle cracked in first gear. Merola's story is not the same. The car was retired from NASCAR. In 1951, Merola retired from racing to become a successful aircraft salesman. Merola then moved to Florida where he was involved in aircraft sales. He died in the late sixties.

Darlington Raceway

Darlington Raceway remains one of the oldest and most popular superspeedways hosting Winston Cup races. This track is famous for its unique shape and rough racing surface. The preferred racing line is often dangerously close to a wall. The track was given the nicknames "Track Too Tough to Tame", "The Lady in Black" and "The Lady in Black" for its dangerously close proximity to a wall. This location has hosted some of NASCAR's biggest moments, including the 1951 Daytona 500.

The race was the first of its kind and legitimized the sport. The Darlington Raceway was originally built by bootleggers running moonshine up the mountain roads. Wendell Scott won this race. Over a decade long career, Scott accumulated 20 top-five finishes and one championship in his career.
