NASCAR 1949 - The First Race

benz car race

In this article, we'll talk about the first race in NASCAR history, and the role Bill France played in establishing the sport. A new division was created in the 200-lap first race that was held in June 1949. This new division, known as Strictly Stock was a departure of Modified and "jalopy” racing.

Jim Roper wins first nascar race

Kansas is where NASCAR's history began. Jim Roper won the first race in Kansas' Strictly Stock Division on June 19, 1949. Roper won the 200-lap race at the 0.75-mile Charlotte Speedway dirt track near Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. His race entry is on display at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Roper was known by his nickname Chris "Jim" Roper, which he took from racing. After leading the race for 47 laps North Carolina's Glenn Dunaway took over the lead and won the race. Overheating and difficult track conditions made it dangerous for many of the 33 drivers.

Glenn Dunaway wins first nascar race

Glenn Dunaway won NASCAR’s Charlotte race for the first time in 1949. Dunaway had hoped for a fair race, but it was not. His car failed the post-race inspection, and NASCAR officials disqualified him because of illegal modifications to the springs in his car. Hubert Westmoreland sued NASCAR. But the judge dismissed the case.

Dunaway asked Dunaway about illegal modification and Dunaway replied that he had only done one of those deals. Dunaway went to Alamo Plaza with his winnings to collect them. Westmoreland sued NASCAR later, claiming US$10,000. But a judge threw out the lawsuit, saying NASCAR had the right to make its own rules.

Slick Flock's Hudson is hit by Slick Smith

In the early days of NASCAR, the NSCRA (an organization that ran stock-car races) challenged the series' dominance. Smith was the head of the newly formed NSCRA. Big Bill France then organized a one-off racing event for 150 sticklystock cars in Charlotte on June 19. It was assembled in one night, with little advance notice.

Flock was leading field when his Buick's wheel went out. His teammate Slick Smith jumped in to help him push the Hudson to the pits. However, the rules of NASCAR did not allow for the car to be pushed into the pits.

Bill France's role in founding NASCAR

Bill France played a vital role in shaping NASCAR during his presidency. He helped the organization develop into a global organization, with the help of a billion-dollar TV deal and lucrative corporate sponsorships. In fact, he was credited with starting the modern era of NASCAR.

France was born in Washington, D.C., where he spent his childhood living on a farm. France was fascinated by cars and motorcycles as a child. He was approximately 6'5" tall at the time and weighed around 230 pounds. He was an avid participant on a local dirt track circuit in his spare time.

Richard Petty's farewell tour

Richard Petty was just 12 years old when he visited the Daytona 500 to see his father race. He was only weeks away from his twelveth birthday and his father planned on entering the field with his 1948 Buick Roadmaster. The Buick Roadmaster was long and heavy and had an enormous straight-eight. Richard was a huge fan of the car and wanted a go.

Richard Petty is a NASCAR icon. He was known for wearing feather-laden cowboy and wraparound sunglasses as well as stunning smiles. Petty Enterprises won 266 races and he was the owner. Although he retired in 1992 from racing, he remains active around the track. He works with the Petty Enterprises team and is a spokesperson for NASCAR.
