Speedway Motorcycle Racing

indycar f1

Speedway motorcycle riding is a form of motorcycling that is quite different from other types. Instead of the typical track where riders are assigned to their starting positions, the tracks use a grid in which riders are sorted by colors. Start at gate one for red riders, while blue riders start at gates two and three for white riders. Yellow/black riders start in gate four.

Racer's minimalism

Speedway motorcycles can be described as minimalist, having a single gear and very little electrics. They are lightweight with a tank holding less than one quart. They don't have brakes or starters like traditional street bikes.

Starting tape mechanism

The start tape mechanism is a mechanical device to launch motorcycle races. The mechanism comprises two or more tapes running across the start line. The race must start at the time indicated by the tapes. This is typically 15m before the race begins. Team reserves will replace those who aren't there.

Scoring system

Speedway motorcycle racing is a sport that involves two or more riders racing over an oval circuit. The riders start in the identical position, but their motorcycles will be different. The riders must take their starting positions in the grid, and are identified by color. For example, riders who are red start at gate 1, and those who are blue start at gates 2, and so forth. The riders will then race on a specific circuit for four laps.

Speedway motorcycle gear

Speedway motorcycle racing is similar to auto racing. High-speed gearing is used to accelerate at high speeds. This type of racing does not require suspension, brakes or lower gears. As a result, the best start often wins the race.

Track layouts

Speedway motorcycle racing is governed by the FIM Track Racing Technical Rules. The traditional upright bike is preferred by professional riders, however laydown bikes are becoming more popular. Most speedway motorcycles only have one gear and aren't equipped with brakes. The motorcycles can not exceed 77 kilograms in weight. Speedway motorcycles can't have a brake, but they have rear wheel sprockets to adjust the gear ratio.

Safety of spectators and riders can be assured by a number of speedway motorcycle racing rules. Referees ensure that riders have enough time to prepare prior to the race. Drivers who are in an accident and are injured are not permitted to stage.
