Where is Road America Race Course located?

Road America, a Wisconsin motorsports track, is located near Elkhart Lake. It has hosted auto racing events here since the 1950s. Road America is an iconic motorsports track, measuring four miles with fourteen turns. It has hosted many NASCAR and Xfinity Series races as well as international events. Auto racing was popularized in America after World War II. The economy of the post-war period contributed to the growing popularity of road racing. Elkhart Lake was the first place where sports car races were held in the 1950s. The Elkhart Lake Road Race was started by the Chicago Region Sports Car Club of America.

Clif Tuffe, an ex-highway engineer, designed Road America's four miles circuit. He selected 525 acres from Elkhart Lake as the track site. Tufte needed to find a way of raising the funds to buy the land and construct the course. He sold some of his stock and the track was constructed.

Tufte dubbed the track Road America after the roads of the United States. The track was built for the first time on September 1955. This 4-mile course was nicknamed "4 miles that go nowhere". IndyCar opted for a 4.048 mile layout in 1997. It's still the same today.


In the late 1940s, motor racing started to flourish on all roads in the country. The 1950s saw the end of auto racing on public roads. Tufte acquired farm land near Elkhart Lake in Wisconsin to continue hosting road races. Tufte was able to secure the land and began to design the course. To raise funds for the project, Tufte employed a number influential local citizens as his helpers. He sought advice from racecourse owners across Europe.

Road America was created in 1955. Tufte was successful in raising the money needed to build the track. He also sold some of his stock. The track was built on company land, so the company was able provide financing until the entire amount was raised.

Road America has become a top-class road course. It hosts numerous events and programs. Road America hosts a range of motorcycle events, as well as Xfinity Series and NASCAR races. It also hosts the SCCA Pirelli World Challenge, the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the AMA Superbike Series, and the NTT IndyCar Series. In fact, Road America was the site of the inaugural Circuit of the Americas race in May.
