The First Racing Car

car racing leagues

Although it didn't win any races, the pioneering achievements of the first racing car are still well-known. Today, Formula One and NASCAR events still reflect the spirit of Count De Dion (the magazine editor-in chief) and the car's engineer. It's also present in all motorsports races.

Toyopet Racer

Toyota's first racing car was the Toyopet Racer. It was made five years following the end of World War II. Everything in Japan was under the control of the General Headquarters during those years. Before they could make their own cars, automobile manufacturers had to get permits. Japan's automobile industry suffered from severe recession after 1948. In response, General Headquarters implemented a new policy called the Dodge Line. This led to an unprecedented financial crisis, which forced car manufacturers to layoff workers.

Toyopet Racer is a hand-built racing vehicle that was inspired by European racing vehicles. It was constructed on a ladder-frame chassis, and powered by a 995cc Toyota Type S gasoline engine. The car was intended for unpaved roads and was designed for speed rather than agility. Kiichiro Toyoda originally planned to build six cars. Other Toyota regional dealerships produced two versions the Toyopet Racer in addition to the race car.

Henry Ford's racing car

Henry Ford's auto racing career began with a two-cylinder racecar. Alexander Winton was defeated in a Michigan race when Winton’s engine stopped working. Henry Ford used this win to finance his second auto firm. Ford Motor Company was formed shortly after he had left the second company.

Ford entered a 10-lap race with Ed "Spider", Huff as his mechanical assistant in October 1901. Ford's car gained ground on straightaways and was able to cut into Winton's lead by the sixth lap. By this point, Winton's car was experiencing serious mechanical issues and was beginning to emit visible exhaust smoke.

Austin Motor Company's racing vehicle

Austin Motor Company was the first to produce a racing car, the Austin Seven. It was built in 1931. This car was very popular among amateur motor racing drivers who had limited resources. Austin fell out with the Vickers brothers about engine design, and he left Wolseley. He was backed by Frank Kayser, a financier. Austin was eventually able to establish his own company in the automobile industry.

The Austin Seven was able to reach speeds of 40 mph and had large, narrow wheels. It was also light, at 425kg. This made the car a great choice for competition. It won more than 200 motor racing races.
