If you are a NASCAR fan, you may be familiar with the 1950 Grand National Series. You'll remember Tim Flock, Curtis Turner, and Joe Merola. Darlington Raceway is another name you might recall. But what was it like to be an avid fan back then?
Tim Flock
Tim Flock has been crowned the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion two times. He was a legend in the sport but he also had many encounters with NASCAR during the years since the organization of the sanctioning body. It wasn't all racing.
Flock was 13 years old when he began racing. Flock's father was a cyclist and owned his first car. He competed alongside his brother and younger sister Reo. Reo is an expert skeet shoter. His older sister, Ethel, was an equally talented stock car driver.
Curtis Turner
Curtis Turner is one among the most decorated and successful drivers in NASCAR racing history. He was the first person to win two NASCAR races in a row while leading every lap. His racing career began with stints in logging and moonshining in the southern US. Later, his focus shifted to business. He was appointed to the Atlanta Speedway's board and built a Charlotte racing track.

Turner's four-decade career predated superspeedways and spanned more than 40 years. In 1956, he won the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. He also won the first American 500 at Rockingham Speedway. He won 38 of the total 79 races he entered. He was also the first driver to win a race starting from the pole. Turner also took part in the Charlotte's inaugural "Strictly Stock” event. He remains the only driver that has won consecutive NASCAR Premier Series races while leading every lap. He raced with many legends in NASCAR.
Joe Merola
Although Joe Merola's name may sound a bit misleading it is accurate. Merola was one the most well-known drivers in NASCAR's 1950's. Joe Nagel, Jr., from Pittsburgh sponsored his car. Merola did not have a Grand National start but he did break his right rear axle during lap 1. Preston was well aware that this problem existed, but he couldn't fix it before the race.
Merola drove Tucker in NASCAR races. The car produced so many torque that the axle broke in the first gear. Merola was not able to retire the car from NASCAR. In 1951, Merola quit racing and became an aircraft salesman. Merola worked as an aircraft salesman in Florida. He died in his late sixties.
Darlington Raceway
Darlington Raceway, one of the oldest superspeedways in existence, hosts Winston Cup races. This track is famous for its unique shape and rough racing surface. The preferred racing track is dangerously close the retaining wall. The track was given the nicknames "Track Too Tough to Tame", "The Lady in Black" and "The Lady in Black" for its dangerously close proximity to a wall. This track hosted many of NASCAR's greatest moments, including the 1951 Daytona 500.
The race was unique and legitimized the sport. The Darlington Raceway was constructed by bootleggers that ran moonshine along the mountain roads. Wendell Scott won this race. Over a decade long career, Scott accumulated 20 top-five finishes and one championship in his career.

Daytona 500
The 1950 Daytona 500 is a key race in NASCAR’s history. The race featured a variety of cars, drivers and teams in the 1950s. Many drivers had an impact on the race. Some drivers were well-known and others were obscure. This article will give a quick overview of the 50s' drivers.
Daytona 500, one of the first stock-car races, was held when NASCAR began. Bill France organized the event. He wanted to move the NASCAR franchise from the beach to a racetrack. It has grown in popularity since then and its speed has increased. The event has led to an increase in the price of cars. Despite these changes though, the track's owner have built their entertainment empire. They now control the Watkins Glen racetrack, New York, as well the Darlington racetrack, South Carolina.
